My partner Ashraful is someone who was born in Bangladesh and was taught the native language until he got older when he started to lose that culture and his mother tongue as he spent more time in the United States speaking the native language which is English. He felt that the more time he spent here in the United States and being away from his country, Bengali made him feel less cultured because when he would go back to his country it was hard for him to converse with other family members and the native people since he had forgotten how to speak it fluently.

In Ashraful’s narrative he tried to convey his experiences from his story and how it started with him growing up in Bangladesh to then moving to the United States where he had to adapt to learning a new language to now being able to speak, read, and write in fluent English being a freshman at City College. For Ashraful it felt easy to convey his story because it was something that already happened in his life and his past experiences. Asraful’s part of his narrative that he still relates to today is the confusion of Bangla when speaking with the native people since he has forgotten some of the language.

In Ashraful’s story it tells us how his teachers who had helped him in the past either when it came to English classes or speech classes made him who he is today. He had mentioned as well that the audience in his narrative is our class because most of us are all similar in a way. Because we all come from different backgrounds and cultures as well as people that have english as their second language.

Ashraful’s thoughts on why language is important is because it is used in everyday life, like when speaking with someone, reading, writing, even sign language. For him language can also feel harder to grasp as you get older because when you speak more of your secondary language more than your first language you start to forget certain things and you stop being as fluent with it. 

In the profile that I did, I’m most proud of managing to even do a profile and how great it turned out because I’ve never done a profile or even tried to interview somebody. A rhetorical device that I employed in my profile is imagery because I mentioned real life situations that happened in my partner’s narrative in my profile. Writing the profile connected me with the larger course of themes of language politics because hearing and writing about my partner’s story made me connect with him with our linguistic differences and how much we are alike with having immigrant parents and being born speaking our native language first and having English as a second language.
